The Weight of a Gift

How much the recipient values a gift is dependent on two things:

  1. How much value will the gift add, or what difference will it make.

  2. How much of a sacrifice is the giver making in giving the given.

A twenty-dollar donation from someone who had nothing but thirty dollars in his name, will be more valued than a ten-thousand dollars donation from a donator with a twelve-digit bank balance.

(That is to say, a patient is likely to value a ten-minute visit from an extremely busy friend, more than an eight-hour visit from another friend that is merely visiting because he had nothing to do, or nowhere to go.)
